All About Gardenias
Gardenia is a widespread genus of about more than 200 different species of flowering tropical plants in the larger family Rubiaceae,
indigenous to the hot and semitropical regions of southern Africa, southern tropical Asia, Australasia and other Oceania.
This genus was referred to by Carl Linnaeus after Dr. Alexander Garden, traditional Scottish born American naturalist.
They really are evergreen tropical shrubs and low trees growing up to 1-15 m high. The leaves are opposed or in dense whorls of 3 or 4,
five to fifty cm long and 3 to 25 cm wide, dark green and polished with a huge leathery texture. The prolific flowers are single or in small clusters, fair, or
light golden yellow, with a tubular based corolla with five to twelve lobes (petals) from 5 to 12 cm inner diameter.
Opening is from about illogical mid spring to approximately mid summer and several species are strongly aromatic.
Gardenia plants are appreciated for the great sweet floral scent of their huge flowers, which can also be extremely large in some species.
Sadly, the strong scent can cause headaches, asthma, or new reactions in susceptible individuals Gardenias have a worldwide reputation for being tough to grow up.
Because they make in hot humid tropical areas, they claim high humidity to get ahead. They do well in acidic soils with excellent internal drainage.
Potting soils developed in particular for gardenias are free.
In Japan and southern China, floral Gardenia augusta is also called Kuchinashi (traditional Japanese) and Zhi zi (traditional Chinese)
